Too Hot to Knit

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I knit this swatch from this pattern. I used American Size 10 needles and variegated Red Heart yarn. The picture is blurry, and the colors very off from what they should be, but I assure you it came out quite nice.

This little swatch isn't very long, but I could have kept knitting and then knitted several other strips to match and sewn them together for a blanket. But, it's too hot for that. The temperature's got to drop twenty or thirty degrees before I knit an entire blanket. Until then, I'll stick to knitting coasters.

I received a wedding invitation from a coworker today. It's a big affair at a hotel off-Cape, fancy dress, hosted by her family, blah-blah-blah. I appreciate that she thinks me capable of dressing up and behaving in front of her family. However, we're just not that close. I suspect trolling for gifts.

The nicer part of me thinks that probably that she wants to invite other people at work that she's closer to and doesn't want to leave anyone out.

Still, the fact that I have a wedding invitation from someone whose house I've never been to, who I'd never invite over to dinner, who I feel no real friendship with, it doesn't make me feel included, it makes me feel isolated and alienated. Just reminds me that I don't have any invites from people I really care about.

Lord, I'm depressed and depressing today. Must be hormones. I've "come on" as the Brits put it (love that term!), and I'm all achy and tired and morbid. The fact that it's hot and humid and there's spiders everywhere (love late summer on Cape) doesn't help either.

I have political thoughts but I don't often blog them. There's too many other people out there who can express themselves so well when it comes to political stuff, I'm afraid to even venture there, I couldn't possibly keep up.

But, I do want this t-shirt.

The Evil Men Do

Today at work, I observed Mr. Executive pick up some papers (not intended for him) off my desk and start to read them. I've long noticed that notions of personal space and privacy are alien to him, but for fuck's sake, I'm standing right there.

I used to hide everything I was working on, precisely because Mr. Executive is such a nosy dick. I'd fallen out of the habit, but it looks like I'll have to fall back into it again.

The Spousal Unit thinks I should leave out some information dealing with "female stuff". I'm thinking about it. Any suggestions for what I should leave out?

I WORSHIP this light.

God, isn't it gorgeous? I want one for the bedroom, but haven't quite decided whether it will work. You can order it here.

My First Afghan

After some tearful learning moments, I've finally gotten the hang of this pattern.

I'm not making a whole afghan because my yarn isn't that nice (cheap acrylic), and I don't want a whole afghan of not nice yarn. More to the point, I don't want to handle not nice yarn for the length of time that would involve making an afghan. It will probably be a little blanket for our Ugly Doll.

Pot Paging Kettle

Co-worker: "I can't believe John (outside contractor making some changes to our database) is dragging his feet like this. He promised he'd have it to us August 5st, it's now the 10th and now it won't be done until Friday!"

Me: "Yeah, he sure made himself scarce. I figure it's our payback time".

Co-worker: "What do you mean?"

Me: "Well, remember when we didn't pay him for ages? And, he got really upset? This is his response."

Co-worker:"!!!"

Me: "It's probably not an exact tit-for-tat. But contractors do work differently depending upon how they're going to be paid. We're not going to take priority over someone who pays him promptly."

Co-worker:sniffs "That's not a very good work ethic. I can't believe someone with that attitude stays in business."

Me: BOGGLE

HE doesn't have a very good work ethic?

You don't understand how HE stays in business?

WHAT THE FUCKING HELL WOULD YOU CALL MAKING YOUR CONTRACTORS BEG FOR THEIR MONEY YOU STUPID FUCKING ASS?

Blah

Christ, I'm in such a crappy mood. I was in a crappy mood to start and then I watched Animatrix and read Lincoln's Dreams. Don't get me wrong, they're both very good, but what I needed was feel-good. Now I feel like all the joy in life has just been sucked out of me. Must think good thoughts. I found a fun personal site from a knitter who lives with her girlfriend in Newfoundland. I love her projects and her kitties and she's turned me on to a good site with free patterns. She also has a really neat photo presentation style, she does collages and the end result is very splashy and unpretentious and fun.
